Ah! My Goddess 10 vf: The Secret of the Mini-Goddesses

Ah! My Goddess is a long-running manga by Kosuke Fujishima that tells the romantic yet comedic story of Keiichi Morisato, a short fellow with low self-esteem studying engineering in college, and the three Norse goddesses who move in with him. Because he is a genuinely good person, the sweet and beautiful Belldandy, Norn of the Present, is sent by "The Goddess Relief Agency"† "Goddess Help Line" in some translations in Heaven to grant him a wish. Keiichi, convinced he's being set up for a practical joke by the upperclassmen in his dorm, wishes that a girl just like her would stay with him forever.

From there, Keiichi and Belldandy enter into a very sweet, very low-key romance, but then Belldandy's sultry elder sister Urd (the Norn of the Past) shows up, irritated because they haven't moved faster and into more advanced levels of intimacy. Then their kid sister Skuld (the Norn of the Future) appears, convinced that Keiichi is no good for her big sister and seeking to sabotage the relationship. Matters are further complicated by Keiichi's sister Megumi (who in the grand tradition of Bewitched knows nothing about the supernatural nature of the sisters); the demoness Mara, who has a grudge against the goddesses; and a large cast of additional supporting characters from Heaven, Hell, and the student body of the Nekomi Institute of Technology, where Keiichi attends classes.

Thc first part of this paper, by Andre Couture, analyzes three passages from the Harivamsa which highlight the relationships between, on the one hand, Krsna, Samkarsana, and Ekanamsa and, on the other hand, Visnu, Sesa, and Nidra. This section also presents the picture of a complex goddess who is either a sister or a wife depending on the specific role she plays in the narration. An iconographic study, by Charlotte Schmid, of the Vrsni triads dating from the first centuries A.D. follows. Her analysis takes into account that of Couture, showing the convergence of iconographic and textual data. Schmid provides new insights that permit a lucid reinterpretation of the Vrsni triads.

A LIMITED NUMBER OF ANCIENT triads present a female figure flanked by two male divinities (or heroes). The males are most often identified as Samkarsana and Krsna and the female as the goddess Ekanamsa. While earlier investigations into this question may have mentioned the Harivamsa [HV] as an important source (second or third centuries A.D. [Couture 1991: 72-77 and Couture 1992]), to date no study has been undertaken that fully plumbs the resources of this text.

The HV depicts Krsna as the manifestation of Visnu, [1] and his elder brother Samkarsana, as the manifestation of the serpent Sesa. [2] On the basis of these two figures alone, however, the events which took place in the cowherd settlement (vraja, ghosa) of Mathura and in the fabled city of Dvaravati remain inexplicable. Here and there, the myth explicitly introduces a third, feminine figure variously referred to as Ekanamsa, Nidra, or even Kali. The role of this female is closely linked to that of her two male companions. The interactions of the Samkarsana Ekanamsa-Krsna triad are in fact presented in at least three different circumstances in the HV Nidra (or Ekanamsa) first appears at the birth of Visnu in the form of Krsna or Vasudeva. In this context, it is worth noting that a black goddess (Kali) played a modest but real role in a previous confrontation between Visnu and Kalanemi. In another oft-forgotten passage, the same goddess, again referred to as Ekanamsa, reappears at Dvaravati. In this context al l three figures appear in the precise order in which the current iconography shows them. Even if the birth of these figures occupies a central place in the HV, I will attempt to demonstrate that the two other relevant passages must be considered if a clear picture of what the text has to say about the goddess and the triad is to emerge.
